: Shanghai LeeNickname
: Usually goes by Lee, but she will respond to practically any part or permutation of her nameAge
: Former biology student, wildlife rehabilitator, and veterinary technician assistant; current laboratory assistant, artist-in-training, and world travelerA Brief History
Upon discovering that the letters of her name could be rearranged into a name perfectly befitting a Chinese version of a certain adventurer-archaeologist, Shanghai Lee took it upon herself to live a life of travel and adventure.
It made for some nice study breaks.
When she isn’t exploring ancient Khmer ruins, walking among Qin terra cotta warriors, trekking through the Amazon rainforest, hanging out with giant tortoises on the Galapagos, searching for polar bears in the Arctic, dodging dive-bombing terns, riding elephants and ostriches, sitting on crocodiles, swimming with piranhas, slapping bison, wrestling sheep, fireman-carrying bear cubs, or wrangling raccoons, she’s probably doing something academic. Otherwise, she can be found drawing, reading, or shooting a few ends at the archery range.Personality
Lee lives life at two extremes: one where she’s desk-bound, studiously preparing for exams or improving her drawing; the other traveling from place to place, crawling around on rooftops and hiding in elevator shafts. As much as she loves traveling, she’ll get homesick if she’s away for too long. As much as she loves home, she’ll go stir-crazy if she’s constrained in one place for too long. She fears stagnation but enjoys stability, and hopes for a future where she can have both.
A quick wit with an equally quick temper and a penchant for blunt honesty means that Lee is more likely to make enemies than she is to make friends. It’s not that she’s incapable of tact; in most situations, she simply doesn’t think it’s worth the effort to mince her words. She’s cynical, stubborn, holds grudges almost to the point of obsession, and enjoys puns a little too much.
That being said, she normally approaches new acquaintances with courtesy and an open mind. It’s just that her patience easily wears thin if people don’t treat her with the same respect. Her group of close friends is relatively small, and she’s just as quick to jump to their defense as she is to her own. She has a scattered but wide array of knowledge, more often useless than practical, and there are very few topics in which she isn’t interested. Lee is lazy if she can get away with it but incredibly diligent if she sets her mind to it, and most of what she is
good at comes from years of practice. Her perfectionism, drive, and competitive attitude make for a surprisingly effective shell, and she never admits her insecurities to any but her closest friends.Skills
Despite the multitude of adventures she’s been on, Lee is far from being in shape. Whatever muscle mass she had gained has deteriorated since the last time she’s been out and about. She can put on short bursts of speed in a pinch, but her endurance is almost laughable. Her practical attitude and strong stomach allows her to keep her head in emergency situations. While her anger can serve as a source of motivation, it can also cloud her judgment. She gets quite disoriented without her glasses.
She is fairly proficient with a recurve bow, though moving targets are new to her. She can also crack a whip (occasionally), lion dance, scruff four raccoons at once (but only one woodchuck at a time), find the scratchy spot on just about any dog, perform necropsies, run Western blots, play the piano, bitchslap sidewalks with her foot, fence foil, speak two to three languages, sleep anytime and anywhere, recall useless trivia, eat as much ice cream as her brother in one sitting, paint, draw, bake delicious banana bread, and pun.
Whether any of these talents are actually useful is up for debate.Inventory

: Technology consultant and hacker-for-hireA Brief History
With her lifelong passion for electronics and her steadily manifesting technopathic abilities, Ivy’s pursuit of computer science and electrical engineering was only natural. She was awarded a scholarship to study at an eminent university, graduated by the age of 19, and got a job at a successful consulting firm. Despite the unrest in the city around her, it felt to her like she was living in a bubble, letting her talent go to waste. While she plays the part of the dedicated young employee, Ivy keeps an eye on the city, anonymously offering her expertise to anybody who is willing to pay the right price for the services of an expert hacker.Personality
A combination of optimism, a little naiveté, and talent means that Ivy has the propensity for diving into things without considering the consequences. She’s restless at heart and feels dissatisfied if she goes too long without tackling a genuine challenge—but at the same time, she craves security in her life. As boring as she finds her job and as much as the routine makes her fidgety, she’s intimidated by the idea of going entirely freelance, despite her confidence in her abilities.
She loves dressing up, talking fashion, and spending time with her many friends. She’s known to be a notorious matchmaker and tends to wear her heart on her sleeve.Skills
Ivy is what is known in her homeworld as a technopath. She can mentally manipulate and interface with computers and electronic devices. The effectiveness of the ability is dependent on several factors. The amount of effort required is inversely proportional to the distance; her abilities work best if Ivy is in direct contact with the device. Second, the complexity of the technology will affect her ability to control it. She can turn light bulbs on and off with little effort, but she would have extreme difficulty manipulating highly sophisticated AIs or sentient robots. She can fix broken devices temporarily, though they revert to the original broken state when she releases her technopathic control.
The robotic glove is not her own invention, but she has tweaked it to fit her preferences. She operates it with pure technopathy, rendering it a motionless mass of metal and wires to anybody without those same powers. Made of a durable material, its main function is strength; it will give the wearer high grip strength, enough striking force to dent metal, and protection for her arm. In addition, it can deliver electric shocks, from an annoying static jolt to a charge that can stun the opponent for a couple of seconds. It’s also linked with her cell phone so she can communicate with people while she’s punching things. The glove must be recharged (solar or outlet) after about three hours of continuous use.
Technopathy aside, she is a talented hacker in her own right without having to rely on her powers. She’s not very athletic, since her job and hobbies mostly involve sitting in front of a screen, nor is she a fighter by nature. She sees her glove as more of a novelty or hobby than a tool, and she’ll be lost if she’s cut off from technology. She also has the uncanny ability to run in high heels.Inventory
- one (1) robotic glove, right arm
- one (1) pair of dangerously sharp high heels
- one (1) messenger bag containing:
- one (1) rooted computer tablet, with stylus and wireless keyboard
- one (1) rooted smartphone
- one (1) makeup kit
: Aras DuvalAge
: 165 lbs.Occupation
: Special ops agent; rumored gun-for-hireA Brief History
As a native of a city-state caught between two larger warring nations, Aras was lucky to have grown up during a ceasefire. He completed two years of mandatory military service after graduating college, and later joined the special ops unit of the police force more out of convenience than out of passion for the work. Rising tensions in the city make it difficult (and underpaid) work. Aras is known to be one of the few members of the police force who doesn’t take bribes, but most people are unaware that he works as a gun-for-hire on the side.Personality
Composed and levelheaded, few things appear to genuinely perturb Aras. His tolerant and non-judgmental nature allows others to find it easy to talk to him, and if he does happen to feel uncomfortable with someone or something, he generally hides it well. His sense of humor tends to be slightly dry, but not enough to be outright sarcastic. He keeps a cool head in most situations and is not easily provoked into unnecessary conflicts. He tends to off decision-making until the last minute. As the youngest of a large family, he's accustomed to being overshadowed and isn’t entirely comfortable with being in the spotlight.
On a rather unrelated note, he is inexplicably fond of coffee and drinks far too much of the stuff.Skills
Aras is a skilled sharpshooter and is trained in hand-to-hand combat and the ancient art of whatever-his-reflexes-tell-him-to-do. His far vision is excellent, but the trade-off is that he’s severely hyperopic. He speaks two other languages besides English fluently and knows the swearwords of several more. He gets pretty cranky in the morning if he doesn’t get coffee.
What appears to be a kingfisher tattoo on his left arm is a mutable substance that can be controlled by the wearer. It manifests as a dark chrome grey form and can take on any shape and hardness the wielder desires (to an extent), as long as it is within five feet of the wielder. Beyond five feet, it dissolves into a liquid mess until the user gets within range again. Its volume remains constant (approximately the same as a handball), as does its color. The substance is also unable to carry out complex functions; for example, while the user may transform it into an object that looks like a mobile phone, it is incapable of making calls.Inventory
- one (1) Beretta M9, fully loaded (15 rounds), carried in a shoulder holster
- one (1) additional magazine (15 rounds)
- one (1) AWM rifle, fully loaded (5 rounds)
- one (1) pair of reading glasses
: The SundogAge
: 28” at the withersWeight
: 120 lbs. Occupation
: Chasing ball lightning and birds, eating everything edible in sight, getting ear rubs, napping in the sunA Brief History
The Sundog doesn’t really know where it came from, and, being a dog, doesn’t really care. Presumably it was a sunpuppy at some point in its early life up in the sky, sleeping on clouds and chasing ball lightning. At some point in its life, it followed a strange bird-like creature down to the earth
The Sundog, for most intents and purposes, is your friendly itinerant stray mutt. It likes company, whether human or canine, and it will actively seek out others when bored. Its affinity for people does not mean it will listen to or obey commands, and it is still subject to the same distractions and whims as normal dogs. It’s highly food motivated and loves chasing things.Skills
Being the personification of a meteorological phenomenon comes with a few perks. The first is the ability to fly and float without wings. The second is the ability to generate intense light, heat, and fire from its body. The Sundog has full control of the first ability. The second is heavily dependent on emotional state and is triggered by intense emotions. Anger and fear create fire; happiness and contentment create light. Excitement is a crapshoot. So if you notice that the Sundog is getting really excited
at the prospect of getting a treat, it might be wise to keep the Sundog away from the curtains.
The Sundog also appears to be more intelligent than your average mutt, with greater problem-solving skills and understanding of spoken language. It seems to have the ability to make people happy, though that may simply be because it happens to be a friendly dog. Its fur is always warm to the touch. As a diurnal and partially solar-powered creature, it gets lethargic when it hasn’t been exposed to natural sunlight for several hours.Inventory
Dogs don’t have pockets (at least this one doesn’t).
In regards to inventory, when Lee takes on the form of any of her characters, her inventory will disappear (with the exception of the watch). For each character, she has the ability to choose which items of the ones listed she wants to appear with her. For example, if she turns into Ivy she can choose to appear with the robotic glove or the messenger bag, or both. When she returns to her original form, all her items reappear with her. I’m going to assume that this applies to everyone else as well.
